Cancer doesn't only change the body. For a lot of people, it reorganises the whole shape of a life, what matters, how time gets spent, and sometimes, painfully, who's actually there when things get hard. These two kinds of change, becoming someone slightly different and discovering who's really in your corner, often happen at the same time, and each brings its own grief.
