What Is Health Psychology?

Health psychology is a recognised branch of psychology that explores how biological, psychological, and social factors interact to influence physical health, illness, and healthcare decisions. Rather than viewing mental and physical health in silos, it focuses on the whole person, offering structured, evidence-based psychological interventions to help individuals adapt to medical conditions, reduce health risks, and enhance their overall quality of life.

Who Benefits?

Health psychology is well-suited for anyone navigating the complex overlap of mind and body. You might benefit if you are:

  • Experiencing Stress & Anxiety: Managing high stress, worry, or health-related anxiety, which often present physically as muscle tension, gut issues, sleep disruption, or fatigue.

  • Living with Chronic Illness or Pain: Adjusting to conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic pain, or autoimmune disorders.

  • Supporting Others as a Carer: Experiencing caregiver stress, fatigue, or burnout while caring for a loved one with complex health needs.

  • Adapting to Medical Changes: Processing a new diagnosis, preparing for medical procedures, or navigating health-related grief.

  • Building Sustainable Health Habits: Looking to improve sleep, physical activity, or lifestyle habits through lasting behavioral change.

What is the Philosophy behind Health Psychology?

Rather than replacing traditional psychological therapy, health psychology complements it by focusing on how physical illness impacts emotional health, how health behaviors are formed and maintained, and how psychological strategies can assist in physical symptom management and medical treatment adherence.

Grounded in Science

Health psychology is backed by peer-reviewed clinical research. Research has consistently shown that psychological interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and tailored psychoeducation, can effectively reduce symptom distress, lower physiological stress reactivity, improve coping, and support long-term adherence to health routines.

Care That Meets You Where You Are

Whether you are coping with everyday anxiety, adapting to a physical condition, or supporting a family member, health psychology offers practical, compassionate support. Delivered flexibly via online consultations, care is tailored to fit seamlessly into your life, allowing you to access focused care from the comfort of your own space.

How I Work

At Socra Hub, I use evidence-based health psychology to help you create sustainable changes that fit into everyday life: we do not just talk about what to do, we explore how it matters to you and how to make it stick in daily life. Drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, I help you uncover the patterns behind your behaviours and turn insight into practical, lasting change — at a pace that feels safe for you.

My approach combines Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing and mindfulness based approaches.

Online Sessions

A session with me looks and feels much like an in-person appointment — we see and hear each other, ask questions, and work through things together in real time. All you need is a private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. Clients forget about the technology within the first few minutes.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, so I've tried to keep the practical side simple. If you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, forward it to Socra Hub ahead of your first session to access your Medicare rebate. From there, book a time that suits you, and we'll take things one step at a time.

About Gordon

Gordon Wong, endorsed health psychologist providing telehealth psychology across Australia.

Therapy and emotional well-being is my passion and I feel honoured to walk alongside people on their journey, whether for a brief time or over the longer term. It is a privilege to support people not only through periods of difficulty but also as they move towards greater authenticity, clarity, and connection with themselves.

I came to health psychology through a deep interest in physical health, mental well-being and how the two interact with each other. Over the years I have worked with people from diverse backgrounds and have a focus on what the common, underlying needs are for people in our shared experience of being human.

Within and also outside of my professional training, I have a longstanding interest in mindfulness, and the ways in which emotional, psychological, physical, and cultural well-being interweave in the flow of our lives.

Above all, I aim to provide a warm, respectful, and authentic space where people feel heard, understood, and supported.
