When a Loved One's Illness Makes Boundaries Feel Impossible
There's often a quiet hope, when someone we love gets sick, that the illness will change something in the relationship. That fear will soften someone, or a diagnosis will finally bring a warmth or closeness that wasn't there before. This can come up with any close relationship, a parent, a sibling, an aunt or uncle, a partner. Sometimes that hope is met. Just as often, for people who grew up with, or built a life alongside, someone who was already inclined to put their own needs first, illness sharpens that old pattern rather than easing it, right at the moment support is needed most.
